A FLOOD warning is in place for most parts of Fiji as heavy rain conditions continue to be experienced over the country.

In a statement released at 1pm, Fiji Meteorological Services director Ravind Kumar said the eastern parts of other large islands, Lomaiviti group, northern Lau should expect occasional rain with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms.

“The rest of Fiji including the Western Division should expect afternoon or evening showers, with showers increasing to rain from later today with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms.

Strong (but not damaging winds) remains over Lau and Lomaiviti group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Southern and northern parts of Viti Levu with average speeds of 55km per hour with gusts up to 65km/hr,” he said.

“This is mainly due to a high pressure system to the far southwest of Fiji that directs a strong east to southeast wind flow over the Group.

“In anticipation of this, a heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole Fiji Group, a flood warning remains in force for low lying areas and areas adjacent to Naqali River, a flood alert is now in force for whole of the Fiji group.”

He added a strong wind warning remains in force for land areas of Lau and Lomaiviti group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern and northern Viti Levu and a strong wind warning remains in force for all Fiji Waters.
