CANBERRA Raiders Fiji is conducting clinics and is focusing on the development of players in the junior level.

The Australian rugby league club that is based in Canberra established their academy in the country a year ago as part of their recruitment drive.

Canberra Raiders Fiji coordinator Taniela Vakamoce said the current focus of the academy was to focus on students in the primary school level as it was an important approach in winning elite players.

“We are focusing on the junior level namely the under 12 to under 19,” said Vakamoce.

“The reason we are focusing on the grassroots development is because we want to establish a good foundation. Development of the players is very important and starting them young gives them a good opportunity and a chance to be picked by the officials of the team.”

Vakamoce said the players are learning the fundamentals and basics of the sport before they venture into their fitness trainings.

“The clinics we are currently holding are to teach these youngsters the basics of the sport. It is important for the players to have an excellent knowledge on how to play before we can trim them up on their fitness,” he said.
