THE Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Kumar is pleading with the people of Nakasi to take fire safety seriously.

He made this comment after officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Nakasi Fire Station on Wednesday.

Mr Bala said people needed to protect their homes and loved ones from unnecessary loss to fires.

“With Nakasi’s increasing contribution towards Fiji’s economic development and with a growing population, it is my humble plea to the people of Nakasi to take fire safety seriously and protect your homes, your businesses, your environment, your lives and those of your loved ones from unnecessary loss to fires,” Mr Kumar said.

He said in the recent years, Nakasi had developed to become a key residential area with booming business centres.

He said with the new Nakasi Fire Station, it would enable the National Fire Authority (NFA) to respond quicker as the nearest fire station to Nakasi was the Nausori Fire Station.

“This new fire station will ensure NFA’s quicker response time to fires and other emergencies to the people of Nakasi and the neighbouring communities,” he said.

Mr Kumar added NFA’s presence in major developing areas like Nakasi was important.
