Hindus celebrate Holi, the festival of colours

FIJI is extremely lucky to be a country where people are able to celebrate all different faiths, their celebrations and all the different anniversaries they may have on their religious calendar.

These were the sentiments shared by Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while speaking at the Holi Milan Festival of colours celebration at My Suva Picnic Park in Nasese, Suva yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Holi was a time of recognising your fellow human beings, enjoying their company and putting away the past and previous years.

“It’s about recognising the fact that it is traditionally celebrated after end of winter entering into spring and harvest season,” he said.

“It is all about colours and celebrations. It is about celebrating each other’s not just diversity but each other’s own experiences and sharing with people living in towns, communities and in cities.

“It is a time to put everything aside.”

He said Fiji was one of the few countries in the world where such events were celebrated.

“We have public holidays for occasions like Diwali, Easter, Prophet Mohammed’s birthday, Christmas and of course we celebrate events like Holi, Eid and various other celebrations like Rama Navami.

“We should cherish this. We should ensure that this culture of celebrations, culture of acceptance and culture of understanding and being able to have that no restriction and being able to celebrate with everybody must continue,” he added.
