Concern over anti-corruption clause

HONIARA – Transparency Solomon Islands has raised concerns about a new clause in the Anti-Corruption Bill 2017 that exempts conduct that occurred before commencement of the Act. Section 6 of the anti-corruption Bill was a newly inserted clause that applied to the ‘Application of the Act’. The section stated the Act does not apply in relation to conduct that occurred before the act commenced.

Locals try to feed refugees

PORT MORESBY (POST COURIER) – Not much has transpired since last week at the Manus regional processing centre after asylum seekers refused the news of shutting down and relocation. The situation remains quiet. Most refugees and asylum seekers are still at the Manus regional processing centre and do not want to move to their new locations, despite water and power being disconnected as well as no food supply to them.

Tonga supports Fiji at COP23

PNG’s first floating LNG plant

PORT MORESBY (POST COURIER) – PNG will have its first floating liquefied natural gas plant to be established in the Gulf Province following the official signing of a memorandum between the facility builders and engineers. They have been tasked to finalise a conceptual design by the end of the year based on project risk reduction execution.

Report to FAO and WHO doesn’t link kava to chronic disease

PORT VILA, 07 NOVEMBER 2017 (VANUATU DAILY POST)—A 34-page report researched and prepared for Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations headlined ‘Kava: a review of the safety of traditional and recreational beverage consumption’, has concluded that “no information is available on the potential for kava beverage consumption to impact on incidence of chronic disease”.

RNZ – The Supreme Court in Papua New Guinea has rejected an application to restore vital services to the detention centre on Manus Island. About 600 refugees are refusing to leave the centre after food, water and power were cut last week when the centre was officially closed.
