Impact of climate change puts children at risk

AS the number of natural disasters increase in frequency and intensity so will the risks for our children, says United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Pacific deputy representative Vathinee Jitjaturunt.

Speaking at the launch of the climate change disaster resilient education program at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort yesterday, Ms Jitjaturunt said vulnerable children living in remote and hard-to-reach areas with limited access to services were often the ones affected most by climate change.

“It is difficult for children to access education in a safe environment due to damaged or destroyed schools,” she said.

“While the Government of Fiji is taking an active role in leading climate change adaptation, the education sector can effectively contribute to this cause through creating awareness and understanding about the impacts of climate change and instilling values that will protect and care for the environment, starting with our youngest citizens.

“It is well known that education is a key global strategy to address climate change. Through better awareness of risks, the education system can give children the knowledge and skills to adapt flexibly when faced with a disaster.”
