Free ride on Uto ni Yalo

As many as 200 people took advantage of the opportunity to experience sailing on an ancient Fijian canoe on Saturday when the Uto ni Yalo,

the only seventy-two foot doubled hulled canoe reminiscent of Fijian voyagers of old,

opened up its cabins to members of the public. The Uto ni Yalo (hear of the spirit),

which is manned by only four paid crew members and supplemented by a team of volunteers, organised free sails into Laucala Bay. Uto ni Yalo Trust secretary Dwaine Qalovaki said the canoe sailed to advance sustainable sea transportation and rejuvenating traditional boat building which were objectives of the open day. The trust is also hoping to encourage more people to volunteer and join in their quest to encourage clean energy sea transportation.
