THE British Government has not been involved in detailed discussion on providing assistance to the Fijian Government for this year’s general election. This was revealed by the British High Commissioner to Fiji Melanie Hopkins, who said they were aware of bilateral assistance provided by a number of countries, although there had been no formal request made to the UK to date.

“We look forward to a fair and free election being held in the country and stand ready to support as necessary.

During the last election in 2014, there was a multi-national observer group sent and that had a UK member,” Ms Hopkins said.

“This is an issue for the Fijian Government. We have every expectation that credible international observers will be invited.”

She said since the British Government had not received any request, it was difficult to comment on what type of assistance they would offer for this year’s election.
