TCs affect 7pc of cane

A PRELIMINARY survey by sugar industry stakeholders has revealed that about 7 per cent of the total cane crop has been affected by the recent tropical cyclones and floods.

Sugar Cane Growers Council acting chief executive officer Sunil Chaudhary said while some areas had as much as 50 per cent damage, the total damage was about 7 per cent.

“The areas which suffered up to 50 per cent were those located near waterways that became inundated with silt and debris,” he said.

“At the moment we are encouraging growers to fill out the Sugarcane-Care forms that are available at the SCGC and Fiji Sugar Corporation sector offices because the information in those forms will be used for aid programs.”
