WITH the Health Ministry’s plans to have safe delivery centres for “mums to be” in the country, more midwives are expected to be trained.
Ministry’s head of national wellness centre, Dr Isimeli Tukana, said midwives were specifically trained to take care of pregnant women to make sure they and their babies were safe during birth.
“We used to have a lot of deaths before. With the midwives coming in, we are able to reduce these deaths,” Dr Tukana said.
“We have managed to make sure almost 100 per cent of Fijian women were giving birth in hospitals. In hospitals, the delivery is actually done by midwives. This reduces the risk of the mother and child dying and it also improves the quality of services.”
