THE Fiji Cancer Society, in partnership with the Pacific Centercom Fiji, hosted the Bushell’s Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea in Suva yesterday to create awareness on the killer human affliction.

Fiji Cancer Society representative Elina Ranadi said breast cancer was becoming a common cause of death in males and females in Fiji.

“Over the years, cancer has steadily increased and in 2017 alone, an estimated 1544 people were diagnosed with cancer, with smoking, alcohol and dietary abuses being the major contributors to its development,” she said.

Pacific Centercom Fiji human resources officer Zakreen Khan said this was the second year in showing support for this corporate initiative focused on doing good in the world – fighting cancer in Fiji.

“This event is an excellent focus for people to become aware of the issues surrounding cancer,” Ms Khan said.

“This initiative helps us to understand how it feels to be affected by cancer, thus we need support all the society’s efforts in the fight against cancer,” she said.

Bushell’s Fiji Biggest Morning tea is running in its 12th year to assist those journeying through the fight against cancer.

According to the Society, the special fundraiser has played a vital role in the fight against cancer.

The Society has been working in partnership with various non-government organisations, to educate the public on cancer, through advocacy, awareness and counselling by providing knowledge on cancer, diagnosis, treatment, support and hope.
