A MEETING focusing on supporting the country’s effort to improve data, information, education and awareness will be held this month.
The Pacific Regional meeting, the second to be held in the region, is set to discuss issues such as boosting eco-tourism through proper waste management; coordinated actions to combat marine debris; enhancing proper management of hazardous wastes; ensuring more informed decisions through waste data management; planning and responding to disaster wastes, and regional coordination in recycling.
The meeting is called the Clean Pacific Roundtable.
Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) director general Kosi Latu said the Clean Pacific Roundtable was still a fairly new regional forum, providing Pacific island members with the stage to take stock and strengthen Pacific regional collaboration as the region navigates towards a pollution-free Pacific.
Mr Latu said the meeting had a budget of $40.48million.
He said it would focus on supporting countries’ efforts to improve data and information, education and awareness, develop regulatory frameworks and infrastructure, and enhance human capacity.
Leading the coordination of the roundtable is SPREP with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the European Union (EU), and other partners.
The meeting will be held from August 20-22 at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva, attended by some 150 Pacific island delegates.
