THE plight on deteriorating road conditions of villagers living along Natewa West Coast Road in Vanua Levu will now be a thing of the past.

The more than 500 villagers living in the area is expected to benefit from a road upgrade that will see clearing of drainage, removing of high shoulders, gravelling, and grading and compacting.

Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is carrying out the road upgrade through Fulton Hogan Hiways who implement road maintenance on behalf of FRA in the Central, Eastern and Northern divisions.

The Natewa West Coast Rd is 60kilometres away from Savusavu Town and is off Buca Bay Rd.

According to Tabia Village headman Mataika Tuicakau, the road used to be accessible by four wheel drives and trucks only – a burden they had struggled with for more than two years.

The road services two villages, namely Tabia and Vunidogoloa, and connects to a copra farming settlement located along the road.

“Before our work, farmers sometimes missed the marketing day during rainy days because of the soggy condition of the road,” Mr Tuicakau said.

The road upgrade was completed on Monday.
