MORE than 10 countries will be meeting in Nadi for the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) Oceania Conference and the Regional Sign Language Interpreters workshop this Friday, August 17.
This is the first time a Pacific island country is hosting the one-week conference that will benefit more than 30 local interpreters.
Sign Language Interpreters Committee of Fiji vice chairperson Joneti Rokotuibau said the conference would be an opportunity for interpreters to build their capacity and professional development.
“Many interpreters in Fiji work in isolation and we hope that this conference will give them the opportunity to build their knowledge and also network,’” Ms Rokotuibau said.
She said the other reason Fiji was hosting the conference was to make sure local interpreters were consistent in all areas of sign language and that Fiji as a host country was marketable and recognised in the field.
Participating countries include Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, PNG, Canada, New Zealand, Europe, Pakistan, and others.
