‘Pregnancy planning vital’

Listen to this article:

PREGNANCY planning is important for every woman, says University of Adelaide pharmacist and researcher, Dr Luke Grzeskowiak.

He made the comment during a presentation at the Fiji Pharmaceutical Society Annual Conference at the Pearl Resort, Pacific Harbour yesterday.

According to Dr Grzeskowiak, 50 per cent of pregnancies were unplanned.

“Pregnancy planning is the most important thing, it’s a biggest challenge at this point given that a lot of people aren’t planning pregnancy,” he said.

He said it was also important for people to know the importance of medicines during pregnancy.

“I think it is critically important that we know that medicines play a really important role in terms of improving health — whether people have pre-existing medical conditions or whether that is around ensuring optimal nutrition during pregnancies.”

He said increasing interaction between pharmacists and women could help in promoting positive behaviours that would improve reproductive health outcomes and essentially improve pregnancy outcomes as well.
