GOVERNMENT is committed to the development of sports in rural schools.

Speaking at the conclusion of the annual Coca Cola Games last night, Minister for Youth and Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou said he was particularly impressed with the performance of Taveuni’s Niusawa Methodist High School.

While he congratulated all schools, he focused his attention on rural schools and added recent rural sports success is a reason the government was committed to rural based athletets.

“We have seen rural based schools causing major upsets and being very competitive in both track and field events. I was particularly impressed with the performances of Niusawa Methodist all the way from Taveuni winning 3 gold medals in the field events while other schools from the rural areas also had impressive performances,” Minister Tuitubou said.

“I am extremely proud at the overall performances of individual athletes and schools at this year’s Coca-Cola Games.”

He said the government would continue to develop rural sports fields and sports complexes and said he wanted to ensure all students had access to similar equipment and resources.

“I would like to congratulate all schools and wish them all the best in their academic studies for the rest of the year. Remember that exercise also helps to improve focus and discipline.”
