5.0 mag quake recorded in Lau region

A 5.0 MAGNITUDE earthquake was recorded earlier tonight in the Lau group.

The Seismology Unit of the Suva-based Department of Mineral Resources stated that the seismic activity occurred at 8pm.

It was located 59km Northeast from the chiefly island of Tubou in Lakeba, 262km Southeast from Savusavu, Vanua Levu; and 332km East from the capital city, Suva.

The department said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 574km.

It stated that the offshore activity did not pose any immediate threat to the region.
