5.0 mag earthquake in the Fiji region

A MODERATE 5.0 magnitude earthquake with shallow depth was recorded to the Northwest of the Fiji region this afternoon (May 27).

The Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources department in Suva reported that the earthquake occurred at 6.16pm at a depth of 10km.

The seismic activity was registered at 471km North-northwest from Yasawa-I-Rara Village, Yasawa; 549km North-northeast from Port Vila, Vanuatu and 621km Northwest from Suva.

The department said the earthquake did not pose any immediate threat to the region.
