3 earthquakes recorded in Fiji

An earthquake occurred yesterday afternoon at 06:09:19 PM local time, 38km NW from Doi Village, Ono-I-Lau.

THREE earthquakes occurred in Fiji yesterday with the strongest recorded at a magnitude of 5.3 in Ono-i-Lau, but all posed no threats to the region.

According to information released from the Seismology Unit of Fiji’s Mineral Resources Department over the past 24 hours, the most recent earthquake occurred at 06.09pm local time 38km north west from Doi Village in Ono-i-Lau.

The seismic activity was said to be a moderate earthquake with shallow depth source location at Ono-I-Lau area.

An earthquake occurred early yesterday morning at 01:09:12 AM local time, 56 km NE from Waiqori village, Oneata, Lau.

 

Yesterday morning, 01.19am local time, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred 56 km north east from Waiqori Village, Oneata, Lau.

The third 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at about 01:24pm local time yesterday afternoon, 11 km north east from Yadua Island.

An earthquake occurred yesterday afternoon at 01:24:47 PM local time, 11 km NE from Yadua Island.

 

The seismic activity was considered as a light earthquake with intermediate depth.

About 14 earthquakes have occurred in the past seven days and 71 earthquakes in the past 30 days.

Last Thursday, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded within the Fiji region off the coast of Oneata in the Lau group.

The Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources department in Suva confirmed that the seismic activity occurred at 3:28am at a depth of 561km.

Another 3.9 magnitude earthquake occurred last Tuesday near the Wakaya Island region 10km North-Northwest in the Lomativiti Group.

According to the Seismology Unit of Fiji’s Mineral Resources Department, felt reports were received from the Suva to Nausori corridor but did not pose any immediate threat to the Fiji region.

The light earthquake with shallow depth source location occurred near Wakaya Island at 12:12pm.

The Fiji region also recorded a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake a little after midday Sunday August 19, located 62km Northeast from Waiqori Village in Lau, 327km Southeast from Labasa, and 373km West from Suva.

About nine aftershock events ranging from 4.6 to 6.2 magnitudes also occurred as a result of that powerful seismic activity.

However, it did not pose any immediate threat to the Fiji region and no damage reports were received.
