They may have been lacking in numbers, but Fijians certainly expressed their enthusiasm when thousands turned up as early as 6am to stand in queues and vote in the 2022 General Election.
There was no better example of Fijians wanting to have a say in who should lead the country for the next four years than Fiji’s oldest voter, 108-year-old Sgkhina Bi, who was carried to a polling venue in Labasa by her son Nazim Hussein.
Fijians went to the polls – some dolled up and others in their everyday casual wear – but they waited patiently in queues, under the unrelenting sun and ensured they did their civic duty.
Unfortunately, many opted not to show up, resulting in a dismal 51 per cent turnout yesterday alone.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem in a 4pm update, said, only 311,000 people had voted on Election Day.
