$10,000 repair bill

THE estimated cost of rehabilitation works for waterways in the Northern Division after the recent adverse weather is about $10,000.

A statement from the Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy said three teams had been mobilised on the ground to clear debris in waterways.

Dr Reddy said the team had also flushed out important culvert mouths and outfall structures which were clogged up.

“The estimated cost of work to be carried out which also involves the use of our machineries is estimated at $10,000,” he said.

“Strategic plans are underway to reduce duration of flooding in extreme events for Labasa.”

Earlier this week, Dr Reddy revealed that their team of officers had flushed out important culvert mouths and outfall structures which were clogged in the areas of Batinikama, Siberia, Korowiri, Wailevu, Saint Augustine School, Vunika, Korovatu and Naseakula.

Dr Reddy said the team had also monitored the Wailevu, Naseakula, Labasa and Qawa rivers.

“We are working with the Northern Commissioner to alleviate negative effects of outflow of water.”

Dr Reddy also said their team of engineers dispatched in the North this week identified acute areas and strategic plans to reduce the duration of flooding in extreme events.
