Majority of people arrested for breaching curfew hours are youths, says Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu.
Speaking at a news conference in Suva last week, he said the cases are always alcohol-related.
“Majority of those who are arrested are youths,” ACP Tudravu said.
“They drink liquor and go out during the curfew hours. “They want some more or they go to some other places and that is when they are arrested.”
Mr Tudravu said people should understand that they wouldn’t die without consuming liquor or grog.
“Without liquor or the grog for 72 hours or 92 hours, nobody will die.”
Mr Tudravu said they were doing everything for the betterment of all Fijians and help contain COVID-19.
He said there was an increase in cases of social gathering restrictions and curfew breaches in COVID-19 containment areas where arrests were made in villages and informal settlements.
He urged people to contact police if they suspect people are breaching social gathering restrictions.
He said people who gathered at other homes which they were not part of would be arrested.
