Five youth clubs from Nakorokula Village in Ra came together to be part of a tree planting exercise this month.

The youths, who are well aware of the effects of climate change, turned up in numbers to plant mangroves and trees to protect their shoreline and village from erosion.

The youths were joined by the Minister for Youth and Sports Parveen Kumar during the tree planting exercise.

According to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the exercise will help the villagers combat climate change by lessening its effect on the village shorelines.

“Trees are very important to ensuring that our future continues to develop, this is why we continue to push our initiative of planting 30 million trees in 15 years,” the ministry said.

A similar event was held in Matainoco Village in Tailevu where the ministry, with members of the Naqau Youth Club and Kalili Youth Club, planted 1000 mangrove plants.

Present at the Matainoco event was the ambassador for climate change Timoci Naulusala who also helped the youths in the tree planting activity.
