SIX volleyball teams are battling it out in the inaugural Burekalou Youth Volleyball tournament currently being held at the Burekalou grounds at Lami Village.

This is an initiative to try and bring youths together.

“This village has provided national rugby reps like the late Joe Bale, Aporosa Dauvucu and his nephew Kini Murimurivalu. While not all get to wear the national jumper in rugby, we hope this is a way to unearth new talents,” said tournament organiser Osea Cati.

In the past, several national volleyball reps have emerged from Lami Village in the likes of Filipe Yalani, Pita Ratunivatulele and Timoci Bainivalu.

Organisers hope to have this as a weekly tournament in preparation for their major tournament during the long Easter weekend.

“From this week and the weeks to come, all teams that pay their registration fee of $20 a week, $5 from every team will be kept to help purchase new volleyball equipment.

“Because six teams are playing today, the winner will walk away with $90.

“This is a community event and we are doing this for our youths,” added Mr Cati.
