POWERLIFTING Fiji’s U83 kg top prospect Loyola Young has set a new national squat record at the annual East v West competition which concluded yesterday at the National Fitness Centre in Nasese, Suva.
In a show of power, technique and determination, Young squatted a massive 240kg smashing his old record of 232kg.
“It’s just consistency it’s no secret it just showing up to the gym everyday and just doing what needed to be done,” Young replied when asked on his secret of consistently setting new records.
“Even if it’s one hour a day I still show up event though I have classes and other commitments. Commitment is basically the key in any sport not just powerlifting.”
Since taking up the sport three years ago it has been an exciting journey for Young, the family like atmosphere and support within the sporting fraternity has really boosted his development and rapid rise in the sport.
“I started powerlifting because I used to go to the gym and the plenty powerlifters and peers got me to the sport and its been fun I’ve loved the sport since then,” he shared.
Looking ahead Young is also eyeing national honours at the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships, which Fiji will host in Suva in November.
As the frontrunner in his 83kg division, he is calling on fans and supporter to back the national team when the regional meet takes place.
