AT LEAST 50 participants, mostly women, took their time out to broaden their knowledge and learn practical ways to improve food nutrition at a Women’s Day Training held at the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises & Development (FRIEND) facility in Tuvu, Lautoka recently.

Founder and CEO Sashi Kiran said while the world would be celebrating International Women’s Day today, here in Fiji we must celebrate rural women and their contribution to food security.

“We shared how difficult it is mainly in terms of food security, but also how people have come together in terms of solidarity in order to support each other,” she said.

Ms Kiran said the participants were shown some very important practical ways on how people could improve food security at home.

“We demonstrated to them how to use cassava flour to make roti, biscuits, pancakes, noodles and removing expensive ingredients such as milk and eggs.”

She said free seeds were also being distributed as many had lost everything on their farm because of the flooding brought by the rainy season.

“We want to pause and reflect on what woman had been going through and to build solidarity in order to support them.”
