The World Health Organization is calling for global solidarity in the fight against COVID-19 because the pandemic is far from over.

WHO COVID-19 technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove said everyone needed to continue with their individual efforts as it would help in the recovery process.

“From a public point of view, any SARSCoV- 2 virus that is circulating in your area, you should treat as a dangerous virus, regardless of what it is, but also know that you have some control over your exposure to that virus, whether it’s Delta or whether it’s another variant that may emerge,” she said.

“We are working with scientists around the world to track these mutations and there are several sub lineages of Delta that we are looking at because the virus will continue to evolve.”

She said there were ways to minimise the spread of the virus.

“And this is about the public health and social measures, it’s about what we do at an individual level, what we do in communities, we stay home if we can work from home, a lot of people are still teleworking and that’s great and as long as you can do that it has a positive effect on the environment.

“But many people can’t do that so if we can stay home, you know, for those who have to go out and do their work, it puts less pressure on them, there are less people on public transportation, we continue to wear our masks, avoid those crowded spaces.

“And I think, some people feel that this pandemic is over and some people are acting like this pandemic is over and I’m afraid it’s far from over, it’s not.

“So keep doing these individual level measures. A lot of it is a bit of inconvenience, but it’s what you can do to save your life and save the life of a loved one.”
