UNITY Fiji leader Savenaca Narube has warned the Government against rushing through the proposed Constitution, saying political convenience must not take precedence over properly consulting the people.
Mr Narube said Fiji had an opportunity to build a constitutional framework that could strengthen national unity, but this required time, public discussion and proper scrutiny.
“Our greatest concern is that this is being hurried for political convenience which is dangerous,” Mr Narube said.
He said the proposed amendments should be taken directly to communities so ordinary Fijians could understand what was being proposed and raise their concerns.
“We must take these amendments to the communities and explain to the grassroots people in their own languages and answer their concerns. We must do this right.”
Mr Narube warned that Fiji should not repeat the experience surrounding the 2013 Constitution.
“It appears that we have not learnt from the mistakes of the FijiFirst party who imposed the 2013 Constitution without consultations.”
He questioned why the process was being accelerated when the country also needed to focus on preparing for free and fair elections.
“What is the hurry? We must focus our resources in delivering free and fair elections.”
Mr Narube urged Parliament to allow sufficient time for debate and consultation, arguing that the constitutional review should not be driven by the immediate political timetable.
“We have the greatest opportunity to unify our country, build trust and tolerance.
“We can leave this to the next government. That is the wisest thing to do.”
