Fijians have been warned against making or using homemade fireworks, including bamboo guns, ahead of Diwali, with offenders facing fines of up to $400 or six months imprisonment.

A total of 113 fireworks retailers has been licensed nationwide for this year’s celebrations.

The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, in coordination with the National Fire Authority and Fiji Police Force, is urging the public to exercise caution when handling fireworks to prevent injuries, fires and property damage.

Fireworks are permitted from 5pm to midnight on Sunday, November 8, while the allowed hours on other days, including Monday, November 9, are 5pm to 10pm.

The public is reminded to buy fireworks only from licensed retailers. Sales to people under 18 are prohibited.

“Light fireworks in open spaces, away from buildings, vehicles and crowded areas,” the ministry advised.

People are also urged to keep children away from fireworks, avoid relighting those that fail to ignite and keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
