NADI International Airport’s next upgrade will increase its capacity to five million passengers, 500,000 domestic passengers and more than 50,000 tonnes of freight annually, said Niranjwan Chettiar, the Fiji Airports Director Projects.
He said the airport would feature state-of-the-art facilities with improved infrastructure, enabling technology and facilities designed to provide seamless travel experience and efficient operations.
Nadi airport currently handles more than 2.1 million international passengers and close to 300,000 domestic passengers annually, Mr Chettiar said.
Nadi International Airport will be capable of handling five million international passengers, 500,000 domestic passengers and more than 50,000 tonnes of freight annually when upgrade and new development works are completed.
He said at present, the international port of entry handles more than 2.1 million international passengers and close to 300,000 domestic passengers annually and welcomes 97 per cent of international travellers to Fiji, 80 per cent of which are tourists.
“Regarding wider trade, the airport also oversees more than 1.3m tonnes of freight, services 20 airlines, and connects the country to 15 cities across the globe,” Mr Chettiar said in a presentation delivered at the Fiji New Zealand-New Zealand Fiji Business Councils’ 2024 Joint Conference held in Nadi last Friday.
He said the airport would feature state-of-the-art facilities with improved infrastructure, and enabling technology and facilities designed to provide seamless travel experience and efficient operations.
He said AFL was also committed to sustainable practices, incorporating green technologies and energy efficient operations.
“Our commitment on sustainability will enhance our reputation as a leader in the Green Airport Initiative, in line with the global aviation industry’s goals to reduce carbon emissions and attain a net-zero status by 2050.”
Mr Chettiar said connectivity and accessibility will also be key features with its locations offering connectivity for trade and industry partner customers.
“The construction and operation of the various projects at the airport premises will generate a significant number of job opportunities across various sectors. This employment creation will stimulate economic growth short term and in the long run,” Mr Chettiar said.
