International travel content creator Anthony Perez has confirmed he is in Rotuma despite an earlier directive from the Council of Rotuma prohibiting him from visiting the island.
Mr Perez, who operates the travel platform A. Perez Voyages, said he had received a warm welcome from members of the local community and leadership.
“I am blessed to confirm that I am currently on Rotuma, where I have been warmly welcomed by the local community,” he said.
“I am here to learn, immerse myself, build meaningful connections with the community, and respectfully experience the island’s beautiful culture, unique heritage, and hospitality firsthand.”
The Council of Rotuma had earlier announced that Mr Perez was not permitted to enter or travel to the island after he allegedly failed to follow established cultural and administrative protocols.
Following the announcement, Mr Perez said he was heartbroken by the decision and acknowledged that he had not obtained the required authorisation.
He maintained that the oversight was not intentional and said he had contacted Fiji’s Office of the Prime Minister on October 1 seeking assistance in connecting with the Council.
Mr Perez said he had also arranged a local host and understood that cultural protocols would be facilitated upon his arrival.
In his latest statement, he acknowledged that issues surrounding the original announcement remained unresolved.
“I recognize that there are matters surrounding the original announcement that remain to be addressed, and I respect the Council’s right to speak on those matters in its own words and in its own time.”
He said he respected the Council’s authority and responsibility to protect Rotuma’s heritage and autonomy.
“I have the utmost respect for the Council of Rotuma, their authority, and their responsibility to protect the island’s heritage and autonomy,” he said.
“Out of respect for their process, I will refrain from commenting on the specifics of the notice.”
Mr Perez maintained that his intention was to learn about Rotuman culture and engage respectfully with the community.
“My intention in visiting has always been to learn and engage respectfully as I’ve done so across many other Pacific islands.”
He thanked those who had welcomed and supported him during his visit.
“I am deeply grateful to those who have supported and taken me in, and I hope the focus can now return to the beautiful people, culture, and heritage that makes Rotuma, Rotuma.”
