THE Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) election is set to commence in October this year.

Sugar Industry Tribunal registrar Timothy Brown made the announcement at the Sugar Industry Stakeholders consultation in Ba.

“We have now communicated with the Tribunal and with the Minister for Sugar, Tomasi Tunabuna and permanent secretary, Dr Andrew Tukana,” Mr Brown said.

“We have planned to hold the council elections in October this year.”

Mr Brown said campaigning for the election should be starting soon.

“You are the first now to know and we are working closely with the Sugar Cane Growers Council on who can stand for the election.

“It has been 22 years since we had the last election.

“So many of us will be new to this, what the procedures are and that will come out very shortly.

“I thought I’d just explain it to you here.”

Meanwhile, the Sugar Industry Amendment Bill 2024 was passed in Parliament two years ago which reinstated provisions to hold council elections.

In March 2025, Sugar Cane Growers Council CEO Vimal Dutt said in a statement the election was to have been conducted last year.
