City lights brighten Gau athletes’ spirit
Most of the students from Gau have no idea what Suva was like until they came here to race in the secondary school’s Coca-Cola Games. They were overwhelmed by Suva’s bright lights but had more worrying thoughts about their games and last training sessions for today’s Maritime Zone.
The students from Gau Secondary School will have to qualify for the games, the high-light of the school athletics each year, against other island schools at the National Stadium.

Youth awarded $93,000
A Lautoka youth, who lost his right leg after it was run over by a portable stage at Churchill Park seven years ago, was awarded $93,000 by the High Court in Lautoka.
Anare Robinson, 21, of Namoli Village had sued Lautoka City Council and a council driver for negligence over the incident on September 24, 1988.
In his ruling Justice John Lyons said the defendants had engaged in a wrongful act by moving the stage in the presence of children at the park.
Justice Lyons also ordered the defendants to pay court costs.
Serevi named the world’s best
Waisale Serevi beat the world’s best when he was named man-of-the-match with a mesmerising performance in the World XV’s 40-31 victory over Leicester at Twickenham on Sunday.
The national sevens captain scored the opening try and featured strongly by having a hand in several other tries.
And he did this playing at fullback and at flyhalf in the second half. The honour bestowed on the 26-year-old Gau islander, who was flown in from Japan to join Bob Dwyer-coached World XV in England, is the highest any Fijian rugby player in the country has ever achieved.

Aralele aims for another record
Aralele Fipe wants to set a record at Friday’s Coca-Cola Games at the National Stadium.
Aralele, 18, joined Lelean Memorial School this year after winning three gold medals in a row for the javelin throw while a student at Levuka Public School.
The teenager from Tubou on Lakeba set javelin records fot the junior girls and twice as an intermediate.
Her junior record is 38.32 metres but her best is 40m. Now she wants to win gold in her first year as a senior and also break the record of 41.94m set by Atelatie Marama of Waidina in 1993.

50 street youths attend workshop
Young people who have no homes, no one to look after them, who sleep under bridges and have learnt to survive by living on the streets, are a shocking reality in Fiji.
The first ever workshop for these children and young adults is being held at the Seventh-day Adventist camp site in Deuba this week.
The theme of the workshop is “Towards a better future — Ki na bula uasivi”.
