THE 20-year-old man charged with the murder of 77-year-old Jafar Khan Ali told the High Court in Lautoka he would represent himself.

Vereti Tavisoro appeared before Justice Aruna Aluthge on Monday charged with one count of murder and one count of burglary.

It is alleged that the accused murdered Ali at an apartment in Martintar, Nadi and stole his personal items on July 27. The State informed the court that disclosures would be filed within the next 21 days.

Mr Tavisoro was given three options — to either seek legal assistance from a private lawyer, or from the Legal Aid Commission or represent himself in court. He chose the third option.

Justice Aluthge then told Mr Tavisoro to seriously think about seeking legal assistance from the Legal Aid Commission as he was facing serious criminal charges. He will re-appear in court on August 31.
