LOCALS and tourists alike can get a taste of a Broadway production once the Fun Hub Fiji opens its doors to the public next month.

The project is the brainchild of the VOU dance company and will feature a 450-seat arena just outside Denarau in Nadi.

According to director Sachiko Soro, this was in line with the group’s founding philosophy of providing sustainable career paths for Fijian artists.

“We wanted to create a new platform where we could showcase our work as traditional and contemporary dances to both the local community and our tourism market as well,” she said.

“It’s a family show, the first show we’re launching is Fiji untold and choreographed by Navi Fong and collaboration with another New Zealand choreographer.

“It’s got a cast of 10 dancers and what we really wanted to showcase is high quality arts and have something interesting to do at night time,” Mrs Soro said.

Mrs Soro and her husband are former dancers and being the founders of VOU, they wanted to expand beyond just performing locally and internationally.

“We really wanted to have a home for arts and culture here in Fiji where we could showcase what we have and provide opportunities for Fijian artists and have a really good career out of it.

“So another part of what we’re doing now is we’ve established the Conservatorium of Dance, which is a diploma program.

“We’ve registered with the Fiji Higher Education Commission so students can come and do a two-year diploma in dance and with that certification they can go on and be employed at the Fijian Fun Hub and this creates a sustainable employment pathway.”
