Tamavua water main repairs delayed

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has announced a delay in repairing the burst 375mm trunk main at Tamavua-i-Wai, citing extremely challenging ground conditions at the worksite.

WAF said the damaged pipe is located about three metres underground, where a high water table and heavily waterlogged soil have made excavation and access to the pipe difficult.

According to the authority, crews worked through most of the night widening and stabilising the trench after the surrounding ground repeatedly collapsed, preventing safe access for repair teams.

“The damaged pipe is located approximately 3 metres below ground. A high water table and heavy, waterlogged ground have left the surrounding soil very loose and prone to constant collapse, making safe access to the pipe extremely difficult.”

WAF said the difficult conditions have significantly slowed progress, with the safety of workers remaining the top priority.

“To work safely under these conditions, WAF crews worked through most of the night widening and stabilising the trench to create safe access to the pipe for the repair team. The working environment has been extremely compromised, and the safety of our teams on site remains our priority.”

The authority had previously advised customers that repairs would be completed by the evening of 30 June but has now revised the expected completion time.

“Due to the conditions described above, completion has been significantly delayed, and repairs are now expected to be completed by midday, 1 July 2026.”

WAF apologised to affected customers for the extended disruption and inconvenience.

Meanwhile, water carting operations are continuing, with priority being given to schools, health facilities, other essential services and communities along the Lami corridor.
