THREE million dollars has been allocated in the 2026-2027 National Budget to begin preparatory works on the long-awaited Nadi River Flood Alleviation Project, a multimillion-dollar initiative aimed at protecting Fiji’s tourism hub and thousands of residents from recurring floods.

Presenting the budget yesterday, Minister of Finance Esrom Immanuel said the project would continue to move forward with the support of key international development partners.

“Government will also continue advancing the Nadi River Flood Alleviation Project,” Mr Immanuel said.

“This project, estimated to cost approximately $400million, is being supported by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Asian Development Bank.”

He said the investment would provide long-term protection against flooding for Nadi Town and surrounding low-lying areas, reducing the economic and social impacts of severe weather events.

“This project will provide long-term flood protection for Nadi Town and the lower floodplain, which is critical to protect the tourism industry and our people in Nadi.” Mr Immanuel said to commence the project, the Government had set aside funding for early-stage activities.
