FIJI Airways Fiji Men’s 7s team are gearing up for the Valladolid leg of the HSBC SVNS World Championships with great focus.
With no major injuries in the squad, the team is poised to better their current fifth-place standing when the tournament begins from May 29-31 in Spain.
Assistant coach Jerry Tuwai expressed the team’s enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge and showed confidence in their readiness upon arrival in Spain.
Although a few players were heavily strapped and some left the training session early in a recent training session, Tuwai reassured that there are no significant injury concerns.
“At the moment all the boys are training well, the boys are healthy and they are ready to go,” Tuwai said with confidence.
“They are excited about the game and at this moment there is no major injury in the team.”
With no new addition to the current squad – focus will be on perfecting existing combinations, retaining restarts, discipline and communication.
Fiji must remain within the top eight in the World Championships standings to avoid relegation to the second tier of the HSBC Series tournament.
The World Championship acts as the decisive gateway between tiers. For tier 1 teams, the bottom four at the end of the Bordeaux finale face automatic relegation to the second division.
Meanwhile, the four tier 2 teams that earned their place in the Championship from the SVNS 2 division—such as Germany, Uruguay, Kenya, and the USA men—have a direct chance to secure permanent promotion to the elite tier by breaking into the top eight.
Fiji will kick off their Valladolid campaign against France on May 29 at 11.40pm local time.
