SUVA under-20 showed the value of patience and composure after pulling away from Kadavu in the second half to secure a 26-3 bonus-point victory in round six of the 2026 Skipper Cup at the Suva Grammar Grounds on Saturday.
The capital side led just 7-0 at halftime, with Kadavu keeping the contest close and putting pressure on Suva’s set piece and breakdown work.
Suva team manager Roko Sowani said the challenging conditions and Kadavu’s resistance tested his players, but they remained focused on achieving their main objective.
“Given the weather, I think the boys played well and executed what we came here to do, which was to secure another bonus point,” Sowani said.
The visitors’ ability to challenge Suva early forced the home side to remain patient, with Sowani acknowledging the quality of the Kadavu outfit.
“They really tested our set piece and they have a very good team. We wish them all the best for the remaining games,” he said.
Suva’s patience began to pay off after the break as the side increased its attacking pressure and created more opportunities.
A second try in the 50th minute, followed by a successful conversion from flyhalf Ilimotama Torau a minute later, gave Suva a 14-0 lead.
Kadavu had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 54th minute, but fullback Salesi Tuberi missed a penalty attempt.
Suva responded almost immediately, with Isoa Lakepa crossing in the 57th minute before Torau converted to extend the lead to 21-0.
The hosts then completed their bonus-point target in the 70th minute when Jone Nawanigasau scored their fourth try.
Although Kadavu managed a late penalty through Tuberi in the 79th minute, Suva had already done enough to secure the five-point victory.
For Sowani, however, the result also highlighted areas that need attention as the young side prepares for Lautoka next week.
