Suva is the first city in the Pacific to undergo the voluntary review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) implementation progress.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa, while officiating at the opening of a two-day SDGs review workshop, said it would help the Suva City Council (SCC) map out sustainable strategies.

“The review will serve as the foundation for a 10-year development plan for the SCC in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP),” he said.

“We extend our gratitude to the donor partners and high-level academics that are supporting this program and providing their expertise in assessing and establishing a roadmap for the future of Suva City.”

Mr Nalumisa said they had identified key areas of focus aligned with the SDGs and the community’s aspirations for the future.

He said the SCC document would align with Fiji’s 2023 Voluntary National Review Report, which would be presented at a High Level Political Forum in July.

“This reflects Fiji’s commitment to a ‘whole of government’ and ‘whole of society’ approach to the SDGs.

“This meeting will provide us with pathways and platforms for meaningful consensus building and action.

“I also eagerly anticipate showcasing this work at the 6th Pacific Urban Forum in September and having the report ready for the Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development at the end of 2023.”
