The Suva City Council is proposing a realignment of council-regulated fees for the 2026/2027 financial year, saying the charges have remained unchanged since 2012 despite rising operational costs.
The proposed changes will affect five major areas, including market and vendor fees, waste management and sanitation, parking and taxi bases, recreational facilities, and engineering and planning services.
According to the council, the cost of maintaining facilities, providing public services and purchasing essential materials has increased significantly over the past 14 years.
The council says the proposed fee adjustments are intended to ease financial pressure and ensure the continued delivery of essential services, maintenance and infrastructure upgrades across Suva.
Public consultations will be held from October 19 to 23, allowing residents, ratepayers, businesses, vendors and other stakeholders to provide feedback before the proposed changes are implemented.
The consultations will begin on Monday, October 19, at PTC Hall in Nasese for the Muanikau Ward, followed by Vatuwaqa Methodist Church in Viri on Tuesday and Muslim College Hall for the Tamavua Ward on Wednesday.
Residents of the Extension Ward can attend consultations at the Methodist Church Hall in Cunningham on Thursday. These four sessions will run from 6pm to 9pm.
A final open consultation will be held at the Suva Civic Centre on Friday, October 23, from 10am to 1pm.
The council has encouraged members of the public to attend, understand the proposed changes, ask questions and provide feedback.
Details of the proposed fee adjustments, including the new charges, have not been specified in the consultation notice.
Written feedback and inquiries can be directed to feesreview@scc.org.fj or by calling 331 3433, extension 245.
