The Suva Rugby Union has started a Junior Escott Shield Championship which will develop future rugby players.

Sponsored by Ram Sami Ltd, the competition will see the union conduct weekly competitions on Thursday and Friday.

SRU chairman Penioni Naliva said the competition would develop Suva’s future rugby stars.

“This is about investing in the future of Suva rugby,” Naliva said.

“The competition is a feeder into our club competition then on to our provincial teams. It is about developing our talents now for future use. Schools competition are compartmentalised where students follow athletics from the first term and other programs.

“Children in the Junior Escott Shield Championship train and live healthy lives. They automatically perform better in school because they are fit and active.”

Ram Sami Ltd gave a sponsorship cheque of $15,000 to the championship.

“We are blessed to work with Suva Rugby Union and children because it is our way of giving back to the community,” said the company’s business development manager, Abdul Shameer.
