A 1.25-kilogram parcel containing white powdered substance suspected to be illicit drugs has been found washed up on Navilaca Beach on Yadua Island in Bua, raising concerns once again about the threat of drugs entering Fiji through its maritime borders.

The discovery has prompted calls for greater vigilance and cooperation among coastal communities to help combat the illicit drug trade.

The parcel, wrapped in black and pink plastic, was found by a villager along the shoreline and handed to village headman Iliesa Rakuka, who took it to Nabouwalu Police Station and reported the matter.

Police confirmed that the parcel was in their custody and was awaiting further analysis to determine the identity of the substance. Its origin has yet to be established.

Mr Rakuka said the discovery highlighted the seriousness of the oceanic drug trade and the need for communities to work closely with law enforcement agencies.

“The oceanic drug trade is real, and it is a challenge that we as concerned citizens should take into huge consideration,” he said.

Mr Rakuka urged coastal residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious packages found along their shores.
