The Super 8 Championship is set to make a statement return after a year’s absence, with its 14th edition shaping up to be the biggest in the tournament’s history when it bowls off at Albert Park in Suva from August 11 to 15.
The championship returns with a host of new incentives, including a 300 per cent increase in prize money, making this year’s tournament the richest since its inception.
For the first time, the champions and runners-up will take home their respective trophies, while medals will also be awarded to the top three teams. Twenty medals each will be presented to the winners, runners-up and third-place finishers.
Chief guest Ajay Ballu Fiji’s Chef De Mission to the Commonwealth Games and a board member for FASANOC and an ardent supporter of cricket commended the corporate bodies who have come on board to support Cricket Fiji.
He said the financial backing of these organisation’s is critical in reviving the sport.
“Your support is critical in helping the cricket grow and I hope this will help cricket become popular again before we use to have extensive media coverage on the cricket, and the progress you have made so far is something FASANOC is proud of” he said.
With cricket to part of the 2028 Olympics Ballu is confident Fiji can qualify to the games in Los Angeles America in 2028.
Defending champions Kabara headline Group A alongside Namuka, Lakeba and Moce, while Group B features Suva, Komo, Nadi and Ono-i-Lau.
Cricket Fiji has also thrown its support behind all eight competing teams by assisting with preparation funding and transportation costs, particularly for the six island teams travelling from Lau to compete.
The five-day championship is expected to showcase some of Fiji’s finest island cricket talent while underlining Cricket Fiji’s commitment to strengthening the sport and creating opportunities for players from the maritime islands.
