The Fiji Bulikula’s ability to adapt to different positions could prove crucial when they face Papua New Guinea this week, with the team having lost Tamika Jones to injury for the remainder of the world cup.
Captain of the side Sera Naitokatoka said communication and players’ understanding different roles were important in helping the team adjust when needed.
Naitokatoka revealed she had been moved from halfback to lock during Fiji’s opening match, while another teammate also changed positions.
“We made it work,” Naitokatoka said.
“Communication is key.”
She added the players need to know more than their regular positions so they could step up when the team required them to.
“That’s the good thing about knowing other positions in your team, not only knowing your position, but also knowing how to play this position and this position.”
With Jones ruled out due to an injury, the Bulikula may need that flexibility as they prepare for their next challenge.
Coach Jone Wesele said Fiji respected its opponents but would not treat one match a measure of what the team could achieve in the tournament.
The Bulikula meet the Papua New Guinea Orchids today at 2.15pm at Santos Football National Stadium in Port Moresby.
