THE need to engage or entice young people into sugar cane farming dominated discussions at a National Sugar Industry Policy Consultation in Tavua this morning.
Sugar cane growers asked officials from the Sugar ministry how they planned to combat the issue of the ageing farming population.
Many farmers said their children would not carry on farming after them as they had either moved overseas or had steady jobs.
Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) CEO Graham Clark said there were plans to design a new farmer training scheme in collaboration with the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF).
