THE long-awaited review of the Sugarcane Growers Fund Act is moving closer to Cabinet consideration, with the Ministry of Finance having endorsed the proposed changes last week.
Chief executive officer of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund Raj Sharma told a parliamentary committee yesterday that the review remained with the ministry and was expected to receive final clearance from the Solicitor-General this week.
“I think one of the most important things in the past, recommendations of the committee was to look at our Act review,” Mr Sharma said.
He said the Solicitor-General had advised that the review be cleared by Friday before it proceeded to the next stages.
“The Ministry of Finance has endorsed it last week and the Solicitor-General has advised to get it cleared latest by this Friday.”
Mr Sharma said the proposed review would then be referred to the parliamentary committee before being considered by Cabinet.
The Act review was among recommendations previously made by the parliamentary committee, with the process now progressing through Government’s legislative and approval procedures.
