Fiji Rugby Union national programs manager 7s Gareth Baber believes the Fiji Airways 7s teams still have time to be gold medal contenders at the Paris Olympics in France later this year.

Baber said while other teams on the HSBC SVNS Series have processed, Fiji needed to humble itself and find ways to match up to them.

“It’s not all about what Fiji has lacked. It’s more about what the others have gained,” said Baber.

“That can’t be a balance when you’re not working where you need to and they’re stealing the march on you.”

The former national men’s 7s head coach said there was still time for the teams to do enough to successfully defend our gold and bronze medals at the Olympics.

“I am confident that if we are humble enough to have a look at what is going to make us better, we don’t get too excited too early, obviously our goal is to be able to compete for gold medals at the Olympics, it takes a lot of humility to take a look at yourself and say what is it that we got to do different,” the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medal rugby 7s coach said.

Baber is in Hong Kong assisting the national 7s teams as they eye redemption at the Happy Valley this weekend.

“Fiji have fantastic athletes and fantastic players but also other countries as well but we have to make our super strength count and that is what our challenge is.”

The Fijiana 7s side plays Australia at 4.25pm while the men’s team takes on Australia at 9.13pm today.
