Residents of Vunika in Labasa are calling for urgent action to resume roadworks in their community after work stopped for about two weeks.

Resident Samson Jet said the contractor stopped work without informing residents, leaving the road unfinished and creating problems during recent rain.

Mr Jet said residents were told the company had not received payment and could not continue.

“You cannot just leave and go. You have to complete the work,” he said.

Frustrated, he said the unfinished drainage system had caused water to overflow onto the road and into nearby properties.

“There is no proper drainage system. Water has entered a church compound and a neighbour’s veranda.”

He said the poor road conditions within the area had caused some students to miss out on school.

“At least 52 houses and around 100 families have been affected by the roadworks. This needs to be addressed immediately.”

The Fiji Roads Authority said the matter did not fall under its jurisdiction.

“Kindly note that this matter does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Fiji Roads Authority,” it said.

The authority requested that questions be directed to the relevant authority or ministry responsible for the matter.

Questions were also sent to the acting commissioner Northern Apolosi Lewaqai seeking clarification on the project and the reason for the suspension of work, but no response was received.
