Speaker of Parliament today expressed disappointment over the poor attendance of Members of Parliament at two parliamentary dialogue sessions, saying significant resources and expertise had been invested into the discussions.
Speaking in Parliament, Jitoko said despite invitations from the chair urging MPs to make every effort to attend, only a handful participated, apart from those engaged in official duties or public commitments.
He reminded MPs that major efforts, including the allocation of resources and expert personnel, are made available to support parliamentarians on important topics and themes relevant to their leadership roles.
Jitoko also stressed that common courtesy required members who were unable to attend to inform organisers and the Secretary-General accordingly.
The Speaker noted that international agencies and non-government organisations voluntarily contribute their own time, personnel and resources to help strengthen Fiji’s governance system and improve transparency in service of the people.
He said Parliament should recognise and respect those contributions by ensuring stronger participation and engagement from elected representatives.
